Beginning Thursday, May 23rd, all Ridgewater College faculty and staff will use a StarID to log into campus computers as well as other systems. Students will begin using Star id to log into campus computers and other systems on May 24th. This includes:

We will send out reminders via email and post information on the hallway information monitors. A few days prior to the conversion date detailed instructions will be sent out regarding your initial log in using StarID. Meanwhile, you can contact the IT help desk with questions or for help with your StarID.

The Willmar helpdesk number is 320.222.5734 the Hutchinson Helpdesk 320.234.8777

StarID is a username that is used across MnSCU to access information technology systems and services.

As systems are configured to use StarID, the number of usernames and passwords students and employees need to remember and use will be greatly reduced and in many cases will be the only username & password needed.

The StarID format consists of two letters followed by four numbers, followed by two letters, such as ab1234cd. The StarID format was selected based on analysis of usernames across the entire Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.
Your StarID can be used across all institutions, so using any part of your name, college, university, Tech ID, netID, or D2L username is not possible because these identifiers may be duplicated across institutions and because of increased privacy requirements and laws like FERPA.
Even email addresses are assigned and re-assigned at many institutions.
The StarID is never duplicated and never re-assigned. This means that once issued, you can use the same StarID every time you visit a participating institution over the lifetime of your relationship with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.

1. Tech ID/Student ID: the 8-digit number provided in your acceptance letter and last four digits of your social security number

  • Students can also get their Tech ID number from college staff, in person, with acceptable photo identification
  • If a social security number was not provided on an application for admission, an error message will be received. Students will need to use the personal email option and request a verification code.

2. Personal Email: the email address that was provided on the application when you applied to the college. A verification code will be sent to this address

  • If a personal email address was not provided on the application for admission or the personal email address in the system is no longer valid, students will receive an error message. Personal email addresses can be updated by completing a Change of Record form at the Registration Office.

3. Verification Code once the student's identity has been verified, a temporary code is sent to via the personal email in the student record with the college, or it will be given to you by an authorized StarID administrator.

  • A verification code expires in one hour and can only be used once.
4. Library Card Barcode: not an option for Ridgewater students
To protect private information, students need to choose a complex password and change it every 180 days. Students will be sent an email notice when their password changes or is about to expire. Rather than send a notice to every email address on the profile, the system will use a preferred email.
If students have only one address on their StarID profile, that is the preferred email. If there is more than one, students can log into Manage Profile to update it.

The password needs:

  • 8 to 28 characters
  • At least three of the following types of characters:
    uppercase letter
    lowercase letter
    special character ,.?/">!@#$%^&*()_+='{}[]|\:";'<>,.?/
  • To never have been used before as a password with StarID
Tips for creating passwords as well as steps to change your password can be found at

Students will first be required to verify their identity by providing one of the following sets of identifiers:

  • Tech ID and the last four digits of your social security number.
  • The Personal Email Address associated with your eServices account.
  • Verification Code a temporary code sent to you via the personal email you have in your student record with the college
One common concern is that the StarID is too difficult to remember. Keep in mind that the StarID is meant to become your primary login identifier across the entire Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. If you use your StarID multiple times a day, it is likely that you will remember it.
If you have not done so already, you can go to at any time and select Activate StarID to retrieve your StarID and set the password.
